A childhood favorite, I originally discovered the Enchanted Forest series in the early 1990s at my local library, and quickly fell in love. Originally four separate books, "Dealing with Dragons, Searching for Dragons, Calling on Dragons,"and "Talking to Dragons, "the series has finally been compiled into one massive tome, "The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. " While the books technically could be read separately, they reference events in the prior books, and really are a series that should be read together.
Each book focuses around a different main character of the series, although, almost all of the characters are reoccurring. The first book chronicles the adventures of the improper Princess Cimorene, who prefers to learn magic, Latin, and fencing, rather than embroidery, dancing, and etiquette and all those boring proper things a princess should know. To escape her mundane existence, Cimorene journeys to the Mountains of Morning and becomes the cook and librarian of the dragon Kazul. Book two focuses on the King of the Enchanted Forest, Mendenbar, and Cimorene as they set out to save the Enchanted Forest from wicked wizards. Book three focuses around Morwen, witch and friend to Cimorene, and her adventures as she try's to rescue King Mendenbar's magic sword. The fourth, I'll let be a surprise.
In the Enchanted Forest nothing is as it seems, wizards melt when doused in water, female dragons are Kings, and some of your favorite fairy tales become the pun of jokes. If you are fan of humorous fantasy and fractured fairy tales, and are looking for a light summer read, I would highly recommend checking this series out.
