"Hex Magazine" is a new and promising pagan magazine published twice a year since Spring 2007, in a hefty book-sized format. It's focus is mainly on Germanic and Northern European based witchcraft, folk-belief, and folk-religion, however, there are Celtic as well as American elements to the articles. The articles are refreshingly steeped in myth and folklore with ideas and practices taken from sacred texts and ancient lore, not just the Neopagan books of today. This is a magazine for the serious practitioner, for the believers of the old Gods, and for those who incorporate their faith and practices into every day life. If you aren't any of the above, you will be after reading "Hex". Topics include a wide variety of subjects: witchcraft practices, kitchen magic, gardening, herbalism, ritual, healing, mythology, folklore, sexuality, ritual tools, recipes, hedgewitchery, green witchery, Norse "shamanism" and a whole lot more.
One thing I have to say about "Hex", is that it has the best graphic design, best layouts, and best overall appearance of any Pagan magazine. What I'm trying to say is "Hex Magazine" is the most beautiful Pagan magazine I have ever seen - both beauty on the outside (the artwork and layout) as well as on the inside (its heart, soul, and amazing articles). If it were a person, I'd marry it! Another feature which makes this magazine stand out is the artwork - some prominent and very talented pagan and folklore-based artists' work are showcased in "Hex Magazine", including some of my favourites: Rima Staines, David V. D'Andrea, G.B. Jones, and Andrew King. Also, even the advertisers are amazing! With period handicrafts made by Pagan artisans, beautiful artwork, books and more - Hex has the best advertisers I've ever seen! Is there nothing to bad to say about this magazine?!
The only imperfect thing about "Hex Magazine" is the subscription price. Issues are 15 USD each - pretty steep for a non-academic Pagan magazine, but due to the full colour, the quality of artwork included, the high calibre of writing, as well as the fact that it's heftier than your average magazine, I deem the price worth it. For those who'd rather not spend the money on subscription, the staff of "Hex" have posted a PDF of the first issue (a must see if you are thinking of subscribing!), as well as a selection of articles and artwork from the second issue available for free on the "Hex Magazine"website.
